Kännikärkitoimikas
Dialogue between woven fabrics and fashion design
In the project Kännikärkitoimikas, the textile seems to have a consciousness of itself once it is assembled to its final form – a garment. The consciousness comes from the textile’s tendency to spin around itself or from the organism-like fabric that can breathe on its own. The fabrics are woven on an industrial jacquard machine.
In this project, the textile seems to have a consciousness of itself once it is assembled to its final form – a garment. The consciousness comes from the textile’s tendency to spin around itself or from the organism-like fabric that can breathe on its own. The fabrics are woven with an industrial jacquard machine on a cotton warp using traditional structures with a tiny tweak. The Finnish project title Kännikärkitoimikas translates to Drunk Herringbone. The fabric of both the shirt and the trousers appear similar on the surface. However, the weave structures are significantly dissimilar, thus resulting in differing qualities – weight and hand. The heavier and stronger double-weave structured fabric is suitable for trousers, and the lighter, single-layered fabric is for the shirt. The felt shoes are hand-felted from Finnish lamb’s wool.
