Light Tissue

Dialogue between smart textiles and material science

Sample collection of cellulose-based light-emitting textiles with touch-sensing capabilities. The aim is to propose more sustainable options for smart textiles as an alternative to metals and plastic usually integrated into yarn structures. The final woven, bio-based, biodegradable fabrics could be utilized to create light therapy garments or disposable touch sensors for healthcare.

Light Tissue is a sample collection of cellulose-based light-emitting textiles with touch-sensing capabilities. The aim is to propose more sustainable options for smart textiles as an alternative to metals and plastic usually integrated into yarn structures.

To achieve this, Guridi conducted an interdisciplinary research, combining design and material science methods to explore the potential use of the optical properties of cellulose. These methods enabled material development speed through hands-on prototyping, integrating aesthetics and haptics studies considerations.

The final woven, bio-based, biodegradable light-transmitting fabrics could be utilized to create light therapy garments, bio-based light displays, or disposable touch sensors for healthcare.

This project was done in collaboration with Aalto University, VTT, and Tampere University.
