Hilda Niemelä
Loggia
Dialogue between Italy and Finland
Loggia [ˈlɔddʒa] is a place in between. It is a structure that modulates according to the surroundings. The structure is rebuilt and disassembled. The installation is a juxtaposition of elements from Helsinki and Rome.
Loggia is the outcome of Niemelä’s working periods in Rome and Helsinki in the winter of 2020-2021. The interest in architectural elements and details in the two cities inspired the work the most. The atmosphere of Helsinki and Rome were drastically different, which was a fascinating starting point for the creative work. The textiles for the installation were created by weaving on hand-operated and industrial jacquard looms. The ideas for the materials, bindings and motifs were created from the sketches of Helsinki and Rome. In Helsinki, the façade renovation scaffolds dominated the view in November. The colors and the motifs for the fabrics were inspired by the limestone, marble and yellow January sunlight in Rome.
